The former St. Landry Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Captain Clay Higgins, has made his decision – he is running for Congress, KATC reports.
(KSLA)- Higgins, nicknamed the “Cajun John Wayne,” announced he’s running for the third congressional district seat Wednesday in Lafayette. That’s the seat now being held by Congressman Charles Boustany, who is running for David Vitter’s senate seat.
“Please allow me to clarify something. People have been asking are you running, Captain Higgins? What are you running for? I’m not running – I’m not a runner; I don’t run from things. I’m not running for office. I’m am descending – descending into the belly of the beast,” he said.
The announcement ends speculation that Higgins would run for senate.
Higgins gained national notoriety for his Crime Stoppers videos.
He joins a long list of Republicans vying to replace Boustany. That list includes Scott Angelle – a recent candidate for governor – and former Lake Charles State Representative Brett Geymann. Others are Erick Knezek, Grover Rees, Gus Rantz and Greg Ellison.
