Six Citgo oil executives have been imprisoned in Venezuela after secret police raided their homes last Wednesday while the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaido met with United States President Donald Trump. The ‘Citgo six’ have been detained by Venezuelan authorities since November 2017, having already spent two years in prison and two months under house arrest before Wednesday’s arrest. The six executives have been charged without trial for allegations of embezzlement, money laundering, and corruption after a plan to refinance around $4 billion in Citgo bonds by offering a 50% stake in the company. Of the six executives, five are naturalized American citizens and one is a permanent legal resident. The US State Department believes that the six Citgo officials are now being held in Helicoide prison in Caracas.
