How do you know that California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been asked to carry the Democratic flag in the struggle against the Trumpublicans, is secretly hoping that President Silver Alert doesn’t survive to make it to election day?
He made the proposal for the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution today.
Apparently, Newsom believes that Americans are given too much freedom by the Second Amendment to handle.
It appears that Newsom does not understand the words, do not infringe.
“Our ability to make a more perfect union is literally written into the Constitution,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “So today, I’m proposing the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to do just that. The 28th Amendment will enshrine in the Constitution common sense gun safety measures that Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and gun owners overwhelmingly support – while leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America’s gun-owning tradition.”
What would the oleaginous pol’s proposed amendment do exactly? Four things, primarily.
The 28th Amendment will permanently enshrine four broadly supported gun safety principles into the U.S. Constitution:
-
-
- Raising the federal minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21;
- Mandating universal background checks to prevent truly dangerous people from purchasing a gun that could be used in a crime;
- Instituting a reasonable waiting period for all gun purchases; and
- Barring civilian purchase of assault weapons that serve no other purpose than to kill as many people as possible in a short amount of time – weapons of war our nation’s founders never foresaw.

Governor Newsom, whom Senator Aisha Wahab lauds as a “man of action,” may be knowledgeable about politics, but he obviously needs to brush up on his fundamental math skills. A constitutional amendment can only be proposed if two-thirds of the states, or 33 states, vote in favor of it in both chambers of Congress. Then, 38 states, or three-fourths of them, must vote to adopt the amendment.
That’s not a simple task by design. You only need to ask supporters of the dormant Equal Rights Amendment how steep of a slope it is.
Governor, don’t look now, but 27 states have passed laws allowing permitless concealed carry. In the foreseeable future, a few more people are potential contenders to join that club. Do you believe that a majority of those states will ratify your proposed constitutional amendment on gun control, which will “affirm that Congress, states, and local governments can enact additional common-sense gun safety regulations that save lives”?
This effort amounts to little more than a grandstanding media grab to divert attention away from the impending demise of his state’s two main cities and to show national Democrats that he is capable of taking over if Memory Care Joe retires permanently.
Watching this item suffer from chronic supportlessness and terminal neglect should at the very least be moderately amusing.
