At least one person died and several people were injured on Monday when a group of suspected terrorists opened fire near the Austrian capital’s main synagogue, officials and reports said.
Police in Vienna said that several shots rang out around 8 p.m. local time on Seitenstettengasse, the street that houses the Stadttempel synagogue.
“At the moment I can confirm we believe this is an apparent terror attack,” Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told Austrian broadcaster ORF.
Police said there were several attackers armed with rifles, and that shots had been fired in at least six locations, beginning on the street in the city center.
Several victims were reported, including one person who was killed and one officer who was injured.
One perpetrator was also shot and killed by officers, cops said.
