Texas cops nabbed a runaway suspect moments after a wild police chase resulted in a deadly collision that killed a child and a police officer late Sunday, authorities said.
(NYDailyNews)– The wanted man surrendered to police by returning to a crash site shortly after the collision unfolded behind him along a highway 30 miles north of Houston.
“For whatever reason, he saw fit to come back,” said Trooper Richard Standifer of the Texas Department of Public Safety. “I would like to think that’s a decent thing for a person to do.”
“The average person who evades law enforcement rarely, rarely comes back,” added Standifer, during an interview with KTRK-TV.
He said an SUV plowed into the Patton Village police cruiser, which was being driven by Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner, as he dashed through an intersection near Conroe. The large vehicle pinned the cop car against a light pole.
The pursuing officer, Baumgartner, died on the way to a nearby hospital and KTRK-TV reports the crash also killed an unidentified 11-year-old child and injured several passengers inside the SUV.
The second vehicle repeatedly flipped after hitting the cruiser and came to a stop upside down along the shoulder, police said.
