St. Paul police fatally shoot man who reportedly fired at officers

St. Paul police fatally shot a male in the North End early Monday, according to the police department.

(TwinCities)- Police reported that shots were fired at them in the area of Buffalo and Acker streets, an officer yelled “Drop the gun!” and the male was shot, according to emergency radio traffic posted by MN Police Clips.

Officers were called to the 100 block of Acker Street on a report of a male with a gun, according to St. Paul police Sgt. Mike Ernster, a department spokesman. Responding officers had a description of a male and a female who’d left the area on foot and found two people matching their descriptions near Buffalo and Acker, Ernster said.

“After making contact with the parties, shots were fired by St. Paul police officers on the 700 block of Buffalo Street,” police said in a statement. The male was pronounced dead and paramedics transported the female to Regions Hospital for treatment, Ernster said.

Residents in the area said they heard gunshots about 3:30 a.m. Kenyari Jones said she heard five to six gunshots, followed by shouts of “Put the gun down!” She heard perhaps three more shots and then a slew of seven to 10 shots, she said.

“It sounded like it was very close,” Jones said. “I dropped down on my bed.”

Jones said a woman who lives down the block told her a deceased male is in her yard.

The emergency radio traffic indicated that police were responding to a report of a man in his 30s who was seen putting a gun in his pant leg and was walking with a female. After police said they’d found them at Buffalo and Acker, an officer reported, “We’ve got shots fired. … we’re getting shots fired at us,” according tot the Police Clips audio.

“Drop it! Drop the gun!,” an officer could be heard shouting.

Another officer indicated they had the male at gunpoint. He also said an ambulance was needed because a female was shot, but an officer later said the female had a facial injury and had not been shot; it appeared she’d been hit in the face, according to the dispatch from the Police Clips audio.

An officer reported more shots fired, and police said they needed paramedics for a male with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the radio traffic.
