Stop Militarizing Our Streets Act of 2024 – Needs To Be Stopped

Today, Congressmen Andy Kim (NJ-03), Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and Robert Garcia (CA-42) introduced the Stop Militarizing Our Streets Act of 2024 to prohibit Department of Defense (DoD) owned manufacturing plants and contractors from selling military-grade assault weapons and ammunition to civilians.  Aka The “Stop Militarizing Our Streets Act of 2024″

“Military-grade weapons have no place on our streets and in our communities,” said Congressman Kim. “This bill comes out of conversations I’ve had with families across my district who are worried about these kinds of guns getting into the wrong hands. I’ve introduced this bill because our families deserve security and peace of mind, and this bill would help keep them safer.”

“There should never be a government label on ammunition used in a deadly mass shooting. That’s why the Stop Militarizing Our Streets Act will prevent military-grade ammunition by Department of Defense manufacturing plants from hitting our streets,” said Congressman Garcia. “I am proud to have launched an investigation into the Lake City Ammunition Plant, which highlighted a gaping problem in our government’s manufacturing of weapons and its effect on the number of mass shootings that occur in our country every day. We have a serious gun epidemic in the United States, and we must stop gun violence before it starts.”

In addition to preventing DoD manufacturers and contractors from selling military-grade assault weapons and ammunition directly to civilians, this bill also requires government-owned plants and military contractors to only sell non-military firearms and ammunition to commercial buyers that obtain a federal firearms license, maintain a low number of crime gun traces, prevent bulk stockpiling of ammunition, and comply with a code of conduct (which includes requirements focused on background checks, adequate staff training, record maintenance, screening of customers, as well as maintaining a strong security system and reporting ATF inspections).

What Does this mean?

Well if we use the term “military grade”  firearms currently affected would be

  • Sig Sauer M17 & M18
  • Mossberg 590A1
  • MK13 (FN-Accuracy Int.)
  • M4/M4A1 Carbine (Colt’s Manufacturing Company-FN Herstal-Remington Arms)
  • M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)- (FN)
  • M240 (FN)
  • M2 (General Dynamics, Ohio Ordnance Works, U.S. Ordnance, and FN Herstal)
  • M16A4 (Colt’s Manufacturing Company-FN Herstal-Remington Arms)

However, it’s ASSUMED that they would be grouping ANY AR15 patterned riffle to be included, which makes little to no sense.
