The Murfreesboro Police Department in Tennessee has made public graphic bodycam footage showing cops taking down a man attempting to rob an armored vehicle and a deli with a knife.
Steven James Murphy, 44, charged the officer on Tuesday night, but the officer stopped him.
Murphy contacted the driver of the armored truck when he was at an ATM just after nine o’clock at night, according to the police department.
Murphy tried to rob Jason’s Deli in the Oaks Shopping Center when the driver brandished a gun.
Murphy told the employees, “I’m here for the money,” as soon as he walked into the deli. Then, as the staff attempted to run away, he started to pursue them.
Murphy was ordered to show his hands by the responding police, but he disobeyed and started sprinting towards the officer while brandishing two knives.
“Drop it! Drop it now!” the officer is heard saying.
At this point, the officer fired at Murphy several times.
Murphy was transported to a hospital but did not survive.
No one else was injured during the incident.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said, “At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing. TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s Involvement.”
Adam Claiborne, the five-year veteran who shot Murphy, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation’s results are being ascertained.
