Gun control advocates and groups really, really don’t like the AR-15. Despite the fact that it’s used in far fewer crimes than pretty much any other type of weapon, it’s scary and therefore must be eliminated from human existence.
Or, at least, from private hands.
Anyway, it’s one of the big goals and something every gun control group has been working toward on the national level.
They’re also still working on it at the state level, too.
Gun control advocates just fired off a series of digital ads targeting Florida lawmakers during Session.
The five-figure ad buy from Ban Assault Weapons NOW will press lawmakers to institute legislative weapons bans.

However, it’s important to understand that while so-called assault weapons have been used in mass shootings, so have handguns. In fact, there’s really no evidence that an assault weapon ban would lower the fatality levels of mass shootings. While Parkland was awful, for example, the worst school shooting in American history was the Virginia Tech shooting.
The killer there used a couple of pistols.
But while anti-gunners are happy to use mass shootings to justify an assault weapon ban, it’s never really been about those. They just don’t think that you or I should own such weapons, even if we represent absolutely no threat to anyone. They’re uncomfortable with us having such weapons, and so they seek to remove them from our inventories.
They’re deluded, however, if they think it will change anything. Mass shootings will still happen. After all, we had one earlier this week, and the alleged killer in that shooting used a handgun as well.
Most mass shooters use pistols. An assault weapon ban wouldn’t stop those killers. It also wouldn’t have stopped the Parkland or Pulse killers, either. If they couldn’t have gotten “assault weapons,” they’d have gotten handguns instead and likely killed just as many people as they did, if not more.
Unfortunately, anti-gun activists don’t think like that. They don’t want to say that, either, because then all their hard work will be for naught. I, however, am fine with their life work becoming meaningless. The organization specifically supports legislation filed in the Senate (SB 370) by Sen. Gary Farmer, a Broward Democrat, and in the House (HB 65) by Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando Democrat. The identical bills would prohibit the sales or transfer of assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines and provide restrictions for continued ownership of such items.
The bill defines assault weapons as any automatic or semiautomatic firearm or any gun capable of burst fire. It lays out a series of gun styles, including all AR series of weapons. The Sig Sauer MCX Rifle used in the Pulse shooting in 2016 is specifically named, as is the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle used in the Parkland shooting in 2018.
