For the longest time many rounds in the AR15 platform required that you used a proprietary magazine system. This was true with rounds such as 6.8spc, 6.5 grendel and 7.62×39. This statement especially rings true with 7.62X39. For the longest time it was believed because of the taper of the 7.62×39 that it was imperative you used a curved magazine. The nature of these magazines made them fairly larger than standard AR15 mags and cumbersome often with users running into fitment issues with some magazine carriers. Additionally, just having a curved magazine wasn’t always enough and many would experience magazine related issues. Historically, there has been only one magazine capable of running the 7.62×39 round reliably until now!
Yes, we know some of the rounds mentioned can fit into the standard AR magazine… that doesnt mean that it will function correctly and you may run into feeding issues which is why many manufacturers recommended the proprietary magazines.
“This is the first magazine that can handle the 223, 6.5, 6.8 and the 2 AK calibers, the 7.62×39 and 5.45×39, reliably. It offers OEMs a tremendous opportunity to expand their AR-15 product families, particularly in 7.62×39 uppers and lowers,” –
