A North County Police Cooperative Officer was shot and killed sunday evening responding to a call to a business in Wellston over a bad check.
According to KMOV the shooting happened in the 6200 block of Page Avenue, at the Clay’s Wellston Food Market, shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Cooperative Chief John Buchannan identified the officer in a Sunday night news conference as 40-year-old Michael Langsdorf. The officer was rushed to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Langsdorf had been employed by the department for three months, but worked for another department for 17 years.
The chief said Langsdorf was responding to a bad check report at the market. Five minutes late, police said Langsdorf was shot by the person attempting to cash the check. Police told News 4 there are cameras in the market but no security.
“Our investigators are working hard,” Chief Buchannan said. “We have St. Louis County, St. Louis City, prosecuting attorney’s office, Mayor McGee and many other supporting us in this effort.”
Langsdorf leaves behind a fiancee, two children and his parents.
