The standoff between armed members of the “Rise of the Moors” and Massachusetts State Police on I-95 has ended peacefully with the arrest of 11 suspects. The leader of the group posted a video on Facebook during the standoff explaining that they were traveling from Rhode Island to Maine for unspecified “training,” and that the State Police approached them while they were refueling one of their vehicles. The member said that they are not black-identity extremists, anti-government, anti-police, or sovereign citizens. He then went on to talk about how the possession of a firearm is not a crime and that they want to resolve the situation peacefully and in court.
According to the Rise of the Moors website, their mission is “to promote a collective of Moorish Americans and connecting them to the Rise of the Moors social and economic platform; to promote the use of moral principles and the branches of knowledge dealing with ethical awareness; to encourage all Moorish Americans to believe in the capacity of each other to succeed in business, to encourage, support and provide patronage in our affairs.”
Massachusetts State Police Col. Christopher Mason reported that a Trooper went to investigate two cars with hazard lights on sitting in the breakdown lane of I-95 at around 0200 AM local time. He said that the trooper noticed the suspects were “clad in military-style gear with long guns and pistols,”
adding that the men refused to comply with orders to put down their weapons before fleeing into the woods, which started a nine hour standoff that shut down the highway and left the area in a shelter in place. Nobody was injured during the incident.
