How do I protect myself from an armed robber?
1. Keep your force multiplier on your person! No gun in the car would have helped this man. Only what you have on your person in the moment is of any consequence in a self-defense encounter, so be ready with your tools on your person.
2. Attitude, Skills, and Plan all have to come together to be able to act in the moment. This good guy needed to have the attitude that he would stop the armed robber from hurting him or anyone else, he had to have all the skills necessary (observe, orient, decide, then act: draw, move, shoot accurately), and he had to have a plan that would work in the moment with no pre-planning. This is why we talk about covering your ASP. Attitude, Skills, and Plan. All three are necessary!
3. Marksmanship matters! Because this good guy moved in close he was able to take the shot that ended the fight immediately. That won’t always be available, but it was here and he took it. Hit vital stuff when you have to shoot. The goal isn’t to kill but to stop the threat, but the most reliable way to stop the threat is to remove the armed robber’s ability to fight by shutting the lights off. That is a perfectly acceptable way to end a deadly threat.
4. This good guy waited for his opportunity to defend himself and those around him. Had he drawn when the armed robber was looking his way this might have gone very differently. It’s true that he wasn’t paying attention until the guy was almost past him, but it worked for him in the moment so we won’t criticize!
5. You will not rise to the occasion…you will fall to the level of your training. So train such that your fundamentals are rock solid. If I had a single critique of this awesome good guy, it would be to have both hands on the gun for control and marksmanship. Practice yours until you can’t get it wrong.
Attitude. Skills. Plan.
