The UnitedStates and Taliban have signed the historic peace agreement earlier today in Qatar aimed at ending the 18 year long conflict between the two in Afghanistan. Signed by US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban political chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the agreement paves the way for the complete withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 14 months if the Taliban keep their promise of severing ties with al-Qaeda and not allowing the country to be a “launch pad” for terrorism. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke cautiously about the new agreement, saying “We will closely watch the Taliban’s compliance with their commitments and calibrate the pace of our withdrawal to their actions. This is how we will ensure that Afghanistan never again serves as a base for international terrorists,” adding that “This agreement will mean nothing and today’s good feelings will not last if we don’t take concrete actions on commitments and promises that have been made.”
