Following a horrific mass shooting at Michigan State University, the state’s Democrats rushed to exploit the tragedy to push for more gun control.
However, one unfavorable circumstance stands in their way.
According to WJRT, following the tragedy in which three MSU students were killed, Michigan’s leftist Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the state’s Democrats called for stricter gun control legislation.
“We are not helpless,” said Democrat Dan Kildee of Flint in a statement. No single law will deter every bad guy with a gun, but we must act to put an end to the madness.”
The idea is simple: the left believes we need even more restrictions on our Second Amendment rights to ensure that criminals and “bad people” do not obtain firearms.
The theory is that once we have laws in place that prohibit criminals from carrying guns, we will be safer from mass shootings.
Unfortunately for Whitmer and the Democrats, the facts of this case do not support that assertion. The man who carried out this heinous shooting already had a criminal record. According to some officials, he should not have had a gun in the first place.
According to the New York Post, the shooter, 43-year-old Anthony McRae, was arrested in 2019 for having a loaded firearm in his possession without a conceal-carry permit.
McRae pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to two years probation.
However, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told WWMT-TV that McRae should not have been allowed to own a gun despite the fact that his probationary period had expired.
“The charge under Michigan law is either a low-court felony or high-court misdemeanor; for the purposes of being able to legally possess a weapon, it’s considered a felony,” according to a statement from Nessel’s office. That would have prevented him from legally having a gun for up to five years, attorneys told WWMT.
In essence, McRae may have already violated a gun-control law, but that did not prevent him from obtaining a firearm.
Once again, the left is calling for more gun legislation, despite the fact that existing restrictions have done little to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms.
Last month, after a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California Governor Gavin Newsom called for more anti-gun laws, despite the fact that the gun used by the shooter was already illegal under California state law.
We have seen time and again that the measures taken by these leftist state governments do nothing to reduce gun violence.
Despite having some of the strictest gun laws in the country, a murderer slaughtered a group of people in Buffalo last summer.
Similarly, Illinois is another state with strict Second Amendment restrictions, but that did not stop a criminal from carrying out a mass shooting in Highland Park, outside of Chicago.
It’s also worth noting that these mass shootings seem to happen in Democratic-run establishments. State governments in New York, Illinois, California, and Michigan are among the most liberal in the country.
It’s almost as if the problem isn’t guns, but rather liberal mismanagement of these states, which is leading to violence.
But, unfortunately, the left will not confront these inconvenient facts. They would rather pursue their purely political agendas than face the facts of the case.
