ISIS Attack
An ISIS plot to carry out a public beheading of random Australian citizens has been foiled by Australian Police. The suspects planned to film public beheadings and then drape the bodies in the black ISIS flag. Prime Minister Tony Abbot says that he believes over 60 Australians are fighting alongside ISIS and other militant groups in the Middle East.
It is also believed that ISIS is finding networks of support to conduct demonstration killings in Australia and that an Australian has emerged as a senior leader in the Islamic State. This leader has said to have been recruiting people to carry out the terrorist attacks in Australia. Extra efforts have been made to stop the stream of recruits heading to Syria to join the terrorist group.
Police detained 15 people and raided more than a dozen properties across Sydney according to the Associated Press. The raids, which included 800 federal and state police officers. were in response to intelligence that a plot to kill Prime Minister Tony Abbott was being coordinated from an Islamic State Group leader in the Middle East.
This week, the Australian government became one of the 40 nations to agree to contribute to the fight against ISIS. The government will deploy a number of aircrafts to the United Arab Emirates, help with the humanitarian crisis, and send military advisers to Iraq but states that Australian combat troops will not participate in ground fighting.
