Flag burning at RNC leads to 17 arrests, officers injured

A flag burning protest at the corner of East 4th Street and Prospect Avenue led to the arrests of approximately 17 people, police said.

(WHIO)- Two individuals were arrested for felony crimes and 15 were arrested for misdemeanor offenses. Cleveland’s Police Chief said several people were lit on fire during the protest.

The potential charges against those arrested range from failure to disperse to assault on a police officer.

As dueling demonstrators started to fight, officers quickly mobilized and formed a human wall in an attempt to keep the protesters apart.

Firefighters entered the crowd to put out the fire. Some people were refusing dispersal orders when officers were shutting down the intersection.

Two officers were injured in the melee before they were able to finally calm the crowd.
