The endless assault on the second amendment by both Facebook and google continues. This time according to several different sources it would appear that google is creating a complete Gun Photo registry complete with the firearms serial numbers and Facebook is helping them!
The Firearmblog first reported this a few days ago stating that It appears Google, with the help of Facebook, is archiving this information and making it easier to aggregate. In order to further test this theory, they tried a different serial number, this time from a silencer review. Placing the search term in quotes, Google is forced to search for only that specific character string. Here are the results.
and the results are disturbing.
According to Secondamendment daily A article out by Jalopnik claimed that if you put in a license plate number into google, it would pull up any images stored of that car or it’s license plate.
Google was essentially using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on license plates in Google Images.
This made the license plates (and thus the cars) searchable by Google query.
Curious, The Firearm Blog wondered if Google was also using that Optical Character Recognition on the serial numbers of guns.
And it turns out, they are.
That’s right. Every gun picture uploaded to Google, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter is being automatically scanned using OCR and its serial number is now stored.
In the past many have been called paranoid for removing their serial numbers. It appears that they might not have been so paranoid after all.
Those people that removed their serial numbers via photoshop are most likely safe from the tech giant’s latest anti gun stunt. There is one thing on everyones mind when it comes to cataloging of personal firearms. This is a registry and as we have seen in the past registrys lead to confiscation.
Maybe taking the extra time to remove those serial numbers in photoshop isnt such a bad idea now.
