Airman killed in shooting outside Kirtland Air Force Base

Brion Teel-Scott, a 27-year-old from Bordentown, New Jersey, died on Saturday after fleeing an attempted detention near the Truman Gate in Albuquerque, according to a news release from the military base.

Security members had responded to the Truman Gate around 2 a.m. local time Saturday before engaging in an “off-base pursuit,” the Air Force base said. The pursuit resulted in a shooting that left Teel-Scott dead and another airman with a gunshot wound on his hand.

Linda Card, a spokesperson for the Air Force based in Quantico, Virginia, on Monday told USA TODAY there was no threat to the public, but did not release more details about what led to the shooting and did not specify who Teel-Scott was shot by, citing an open investigation.

Teel-Scott’s cause of death remained under investigation on Monday.

The case is being handled by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations in cooperation with the FBI and the Albuquerque Police Department.
