With nearly 20 years of law enforcement behind me, I’ve carried my share of different pistols. Some were chosen for me, others were selected off a list of approved personally owned weapons. For the last decade I’ve picked GLOCK as my choice for on duty and off duty carry. Besides being hyper-reliable, they fit my shooting style perfectly.
This does not detract from the other handgun options available to U.S. law enforcement. I firmly believe that if a weapon is both safe and reliable, individual LE officers should be able to carry any gun they can shoot with confidence. If that means carrying a double action only semi-auto, a 1911 or even a wheelgun, so be it. It just so happens that my choice is a GLOCK 17/26 combo.
I recognize the need for larger organizations to promote standardization: manual of arms, armorers parts, tools and training, magazine interchangeability, budgets and yes even politics play a role in handgunselections. On the other hand, I also understand that many officers are not “gun people” and need guidance in their sidearm selection. After all, it’s those guns that will be shot at most four times and 200 rounds a year.
