Protests becoming counterproductive

SJ reports

The violent protests that occurred during the Chicago rally for then-candidate Donald Trump, during Trump’s presidential inauguration and at several university campuses since then; and before them, at Occupy Wall Street, at Ferguson, Missouri, and at Baltimore, Maryland; and now the riots over confederate statues, are, in my humble opinion, becoming more and more counterproductive to the causes that are being protested.

When the average person sees wanton destruction of property and other illegal behavior on TV or the internet, even if he or she does not like President Trump or agrees with the views of the protesters, he or she will be more likely to reject such radical political protest. Legal protest is fine and guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution — but destruction of property and endangering the lives of police and others is anarchy and not acceptable in a civilized society.
